Shabby Chic Furniture

Shabby chic is a form of interior design where furniture and furnishings are either chosen for their appearance of age and signs of wear and tear, or where new items are distressed to achieve the appearance of an antique. At the same time, a soft, opulent, yet cottage-style decor, often with an affected feel, is emphasised to differentiate it from genuine period decor.

Shabby chic items are often heavily painted through the years, with many layers showing through obviously time-worn areas. The style is imitated in faux painting using glaze and/or wax, or by painting then rubbing and sanding away the top coat to show the wood or base coats, known as ‘distressing’ the finish of the furniture. Furniture pieces that are not genuine antiques are usually selected for their resemblance to older furniture styles, and may be reproduction furniture with a distressed finish. Elaborate furniture appliques depicting flower swags and garlands, cherubs, and other motifs may be added.

We sell ‘Shabby Chic’ furniture which includes antique, vintage and modern pieces of furniture which we source from the UK and Europe and apply any number of the techniques stated above, to create the desired effect. The furniture you are buying is ‘second-hand’ and if known to be antique, will be stated in the item description. The finishes we use on each item will also be clearly stated in the item description. Although our items are second-hand, we treat any items showing signs of wood-worm prior to painting and ensure all items are sturdy and in good working order prior to sale.

You’re Safety

If you are purchasing large/heavy/tall items, such as wardrobes, kitchen dressers and cabinets, we recommend you fix these items to a solid wall to prevent items falling forward and causing injury. We cannot accept any responsibility for accidents occurring in this manner.
